What “free” really gets you
Most online website builders have a free plan. It usually comes with:
- An address that isn’t yours, under the platform’s name (yourbusiness.platform-name.com): hard to remember, and to put on a business card.
- The platform’s advertising or banner on your pages.
- Limits on space, pages or features, lifted only by a paid plan.
- Your time: you choose the design, write the texts, lay out the pages and check them on a phone yourself.
To use your own domain name and remove the advertising, you have to move to a paid plan. A “free” website often ends up as a paid one.
The free tools worth having anyway
- Your Google Business Profile: free, it shows your hours, address, phone number and reviews in Google Search and Maps. If you welcome customers or travel to them, create one. It doesn’t replace a website: in 2024 Google closed the simple websites it used to offer with these profiles.
- A Facebook or Instagram page: handy for news and photos, but it belongs to the platform. Website or Facebook page?
When a paid website is worth it
- You want people to find you on Google when they search for your trade and your town.
- You want to look as serious as your competitors, with your own address: yourbusiness.fr.
- You don’t have the time, or the wish, to build and update it yourself.
- You want a website that is still there in five years, without a platform’s advertising.
Paid doesn’t have to mean expensive: see what a website costs, from building it yourself to hiring an agency.
